Care Instructions

😎 Light: thrives in bright, indirect sunlight but can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially in the morning or late afternoon. Avoid prolonged exposure to intense midday sun to prevent leaf burn. A location with filtered light or partial shade is ideal.

💧 Water: Every 1-2 weeks
Water your elephant creeper regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. During the growing season (spring and summer), water more frequently, ensuring the top inch of soil remains damp. Reduce watering during the fall and winter months, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.

The more light your plant gets, the more you'll need to water it. Similarly, the less light it gets, the less it will need.

⛏️ Difficulty: Moderate care.

This plant can be fairly picky in terms of light, but if placed in a bright spot and watered when needed, it'll thrive!

🐩 Pets: Careful with pets

Elephant creeper is toxic to pets if ingested, so it should be kept out of reach of cats and dogs.

Description

Elephant Creeper | Silver Morning Glory | Elephant Climber

The Elephant Creeper, scientifically known as Argyreia nervosa, is a perennial climbing vine that is native to the Indian subcontinent. This plant is well-known for its large, heart-shaped leaves and striking, trumpet-shaped flowers that range in color from pale pink to lavender. The leaves have a velvety texture, often referred to as “woolly,” which contributes to one of its common names, the Woolly Morning Glory. The vine can grow quite vigorously, making it an excellent choice for covering trellises, arbors, and fences, adding both aesthetic appeal and privacy to gardens.

In addition to its ornamental value, the Elephant Creeper has significant cultural and medicinal importance. In traditional Ayurvedic medicine, it is known as “Vidhara” and is used for its purported health benefits, including its use as a tonic and in the treatment of various ailments such as inflammation and skin diseases. The seeds of the plant contain psychoactive compounds and have been historically used for their hallucinogenic properties, particularly in Hawaiian shamanic practices, hence the name Hawaiian Baby Woodrose. However, caution is advised as the seeds can be toxic if not prepared properly. Overall, the Elephant Creeper is a multifaceted plant that combines beauty with a rich tapestry of traditional uses.

Note: Elephant creeper is toxic to pets if ingested, so it should be kept out of reach of cats and dogs.
